Spring Ski 2024 - Team Accelerati
End of April at Sugarbush and Killington, VT. Great weather both days. 75 degrees at the base at Killington! Yes, there is an overabundance of me skiing the bumps, and a lot of Jens, as well. But I had the only camera, and Jens and I skied all the same runs. The video is chronological, so you can see Jens and I getting sloppy at the end as we get totally tuckered out! Overall, a fantastic weekend with great friends, food and drink!

I got a new GoPro 11, and I hadn't used my wing-mount in a very long time, so that's what this is. I was curious to see what the hammerheads looked like from this view point. There was a nice thin cloud layer that was fun to fly around. Probably looked better in person than in the video. A cold camera battery cut off the touchdown at landing (really, it wasn't a poor landing!). "Thingamajig" by...

Lighting was not optimal, but flight conditions were awesome! Many of the maneuvers were strung together, but because diving is required to gain airspeed for maneuvers, I edited out the time I spent climbing back to altitude. All maneuvers are done between 3,500' and 5,000'. In competition, loops need to be started from level flight, even if having to dive for airspeed, so for a couple of the l...

It was time to take Waiex N59YK to its new home in Ohio. This is the flight down to drop it off. The aircraft is homebuilt from a kit (by Sonex Aircraft), built by Max Emmighausen in New Hampshire. It's all aluminum, with a 110 HP Viking engine (based on a Honda Fit), turning a 3-bladed Warp Drive composite propeller. The Dynon Skyview avionics has a moving map, 2-axis autopilot and full engine...
Talking Thru Flight in Waiex 59YK

More flight testing. We changed the flight displays to KTS instead of MPH, so this was the first flight to correlate the flight regimes to knots. I also got up to 10,000' for the first time so we could verify the ADSB worked (up here in NH, the nearest ADSB ground antennas are MILES away on the other side of the mountains). The ADSB did work, and we confirmed it with a report from the FAA.

    Aren't intentional spins prohibited?

    • @mikesmith208
      @mikesmith208 3 месяца назад

      No. It's an experimental home built aircraft, and so nothing is prohibited except by common sense. But it's an aerobatic aircraft, stressed for +6/-3 Gs. Spins are part of what it was designed to do. It recovers very quickly with standard spin recovery techniques.

    How well does the plane climb with passengers? At 1100 lbs, can it even climb?

    • @mikesmith208
      @mikesmith208 10 месяцев назад

      It's an 80hp engine, so you have to know what it can and can't do or you'll end up pretty unhappy. In cold weather, at 1100 lbs, I can climb out at 1,000 fpm, and it performs quite well. On a hot summer day, at gross weight, I may only see 300 fpm on takeoff, which is not very comfortable if there are any obstructions ahead, like tall trees. So I don't often fly at gross weight on hot days. When I travel out to OSH at gross weight, I leave in the morning when it's cool, and choose fuel stops with longer runways and fewer obstructions. By the time I get to Ohio that's usually not a problem.

    I spun my KR2 regularly . The first time scared me as it snapped into a spin when I applied cruise power while recovering from a mush, while practicing stalls . The airplane would just go into a mush , fully controllable . No break or wing drop . It spun really fast either way and recovered fast. One hell of an airplane but very sensitive in pitch . It would fly in ground effect at 40 mph at full gross . As a tail wheel you had to hold the tail up until below 40. Still it was quick on the controls.

      You can't build a car but a plane is not a problem. Plastic engine cowling? If you are cold just wear motorcycle gear. Why not sit in the middle of the plane. The propeller is the most important part of a plane.
